In Transit (2013)

When I first moved to New York City, I was struck by the daily experience of traveling on the subway – the sights, the sounds, the uncertainty. I found the experience of being constantly in contact with different people, at different stages of their lives, social classes, and situations to be revealing about the nature of society as a whole. Through this installation, I am interested in exploring and sharing the experience of being on public transportation in this work, specifically the public transit system in Arizona State University near where I currently live. For this work, I and two other artists, Brent Brimhall and Garrett Johnson, recorded our experiences traveling each round-trip route of the Orbit Bus System. The projection displays our locations during each part of the journey, and through ‘In Transit’ app installed on the iPad, visitors may listen to the sounds that we were experiencing at that moment during the journey. The map in this installation is derived from the Tempe Orbit System Map courtesy of the city of Tempe, Arizona.

This work has been shown at the DC Gallery, Arizona State University, Tempe, AZ.
